The question Dr. Elaine Ingham asked of every handful of ground
Dirt is ground-up rock. Soil is alive. In a single handful there are more living creatures than there are people on Earth: bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and nematodes that feed plants, store carbon, and hold water in the ground.
When that life is farmed out with tillage and chemicals, soil turns to lifeless dust, and the crops, the water, and the climate above it suffer for it. Dr. Ingham proved the process runs both ways. Bring the biology back, and the dust becomes soil again. No synthetic fertilizer. No pesticides. Just the living world doing what it has always done.

Dr. Elaine Ingham was a soil microbiologist who spent four decades looking through the microscope at what most people walk over without a thought. She named the web of life in the soil, the Soil Food Web, and worked out exactly how to rebuild it.
She taught farmers and growers on six continents that dead soil can be brought back to life, with biology instead of chemicals.
Then she gave it away. She founded the Soil Food Web School to put that knowledge into the hands of anyone willing to learn it, from smallholders to restoration crews to backyard gardeners. The Foundation exists to keep that promise going.
